Install drivers for Wifi N300 usb adapters Trendnet TEW-624UB, TP-Link WN821N, Asus n13, Edimax etc on linux, based on the rtl8192cu realtek chipset/drivers.

The rtl8192cu drivers come shipped with the default kernels in linux. Albeit functional, its unmaintained by Realtek. The devices supported are for N150 based devices and N300 devices are dilapidated in their functionality by this driver.

This doc will tell you how to install drivers for the rtl8192cu wifi chipset working at full N300 speeds from kernel 3.10 onwards…

Realtek does not provide updated drivers and hence is maintained at github by Janez Troha and Steffan Keller.

On Ubuntu/debian download the dependencies:

sudo apt-get install git build-essential linux-headers-generic

On Arch/Manjaro download the dependencies:

pacman -S linux-headers

choose the correct header series for your kernel.

Download rtl8192cu for kernel 3.10:

git clone https://github.com/dz0ny/rt8192cu.git

If git is not present, install it.

Next, change directory:

cd rt8192cu

Run make:

make
sudo make install

Note: If you get an error like /build directory already exists, then delete it by using its absolute path…like:

rmdir /lib/..../..../..../build

Now you have to remove the old driver from the kernel:

sudo modprobe -r rtl8192cu

Next, enter your newly compiled module(8192cu.ko) into the kernel:

sudo modprobe 8192cu

Blacklist the old driver(rtl8192cu), so that it does not load on startup:

sudo echo "blacklist rtl8192cu" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

REBOOT. The rtl8192cu should work days on end without a glitch.

NOTE:THE DRIVER LOCATED AT http://152.104.125.41/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=48&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true#RTL8192CU WILL NOT WORK WITH KERNEL 3.8++(maybe even earlier versions may not work). JANEZ TROHA HAS MAD CHANGES TO THE SOURCE TO MAKE IT COMPATIBLE WITH NEWER KERNELS. UPDATE FOR NEWER KERNELS–3.11++ WILL BE DECLARED AT HIS GIT: https://github.com/dz0ny/rt8192cu

A myriad of devices on the market made by Tplink, asus, edimax, trendnet etc are based on this pathetic rtl8192cu chipset. Realtek does not bother updating the driver to work with new hardware on newer kernels. I have a dlink dwa 131 N300 which i believe has the rtl8192su chipset but has excellent linux and windows support. DWA-131 works plug-n-play on windows/linux. My point being stay aloof from devices based on the rtl8192cu wifi chipset.

Use your Android phone/phablet to control VLC player on Linux(all distros) and Windows 8

Use your Android phone/phablet to control VLC player on Linux(all distros) and Windows 8 computer.

This method will turn your android device into a remote control for your computer/dedicated HTPC/STB or any multimedia device that USES VLC media player with networking capabilities.

Before proceeding ahead install vlc sdr lite or Remote for Vlc on your android phone or device from the play store.

Control your vlc player with your Android device…
You can install the latest version of vlc from videolan.org website…but before that uninstall vlc completely and delete the directory from /usr/share/vlc…..
In ubuntu and arch linux install from software-centre and terminal using pacman respectively…

With vlc working….do as follows:
open vlc gui…..goto Tools……..preferences…….then under show settings –click all………on the left side scroll down to ‘Main interface’—–enable/check the ‘web’ box on the right…….click save and exit from vlc.

open terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+T
type this:

sudo nano /usr/share/vlc/lua/http/.hosts

—-enter your password…

next……
unhash the following lines from the code as shown below:

    #
    # Access-list for VLC HTTP interface
    # $Id$
    #

    # localhost
    ::1
    127.0.0.1

    # link-local addresses
    #fe80::/64

    # private addresses
    fc00::/7
    fec0::/10
    10.0.0.0/8

    # The world (uncommenting these 2 lines is not quite safe)

Once you have unhashed all the lines below from #private addresses…then press CTRL+O to save ….next press enter…..then press CTRL+X to exit….

DONE. THe computer side is done…..now take your android phone/phablet etc and ENABLE wifi. Next open the respective app(there are many apps …they might all work). In Remote for Vlc go to ‘Add VLC server’ and enter the **ip address of your computer and let the port (8080) be alone. press ok.

**Now to check your network ip address that you must enter on your vlc remote app on phone….click on the network status icon on your panel……next click —connection information—your IP address will be given something like 192.168.0.XX……Enter this in your vlc remote phone app……

DONE…

open a video in vlc on computer and check your app to see if you are able to control it like a remote from your phone….

NOTE: This procedure will work for the whole linux world and not specific to any distro.

Same procedure for WIndows 8 !!…….do as follows..
open wordpad as administrator.
Next click on open and then browse to C:/Program Files(x86)/VideoLAN/VLC/lua/http/.hosts…..and do the usual unhashing as mentioned above and save and exit…..also dont forget to enable the ‘web’ box under Main interfaces in vlc.

Install AMD Radeon Catalyst Control Centre Drivers on Linux(2013)

The video below shows you how to install AMD radeon drivers for Radeon HD cards 3000, 4000, 5000 ,6000, 7000, 8000 and the latest Rx 200 series AND APU’s beginning from Llano, trinity, Richland and yet to be released Kaveri.
For successful installation the major dependencies are: gcc, make and binutils.
Install them from your respective repos; ubuntu/debian, arch/manjaro, fedora/suse/rhel etc.

Enable or Install D-Link DWM 156 broadband modem on ubuntu 12.04/ 12.10 x86 or x86_64

The dwm-156 comes shipped with a 32 bit driver file (.deb format) in its native small flash storage, albeit it can be installed on a 64 bit ubuntu with the ia32-lib dependency installed from software centre.

Before proceeding ahead i would say that i used ultimate edition linux 3.4 64 bit– this distro has all the library and dependencies for installing drivers(ia32-libs, usb_modeswitch).

The driver supplied with the dongle is a 32 bit driver. This successfully gets installed on a 64 bit ubuntu if and only if you have– ia32-libs installed…………….

I used this driver with lubuntu 64 bit and got an error message when i run the command after install the 32 bit driver on 64 bit ubuntu:

usbdeviceswitchdlink

—> /usr/bin/usbdeviceswitchdlink: command not found

The work around is simple…at the terminal type this:

sudo su

—- ENTER password

Then type…

apt-get -y install ia32-libs

The above command will add 32 bit compatibility on 64 bit ubuntu successfully.

if you get an error message …run the command again.

Once successfully installed proceed ahead and you shouldn’t get any error messages once you have installed the 32 bit driver on your 64 bit ubuntu……………….

Open terminal press ctrl+alt+t

type usb without quotes then press tab twice

if you don’t see usb_modeswitch it means it is not installed – good you don’t need it. if yes you need to uninstall usb_modeswitch.

Step 1

Now the command is

sudo su

enter pass

mkdir /media/cdrom
mount /dev/srx     /media/cdrom 

press tab twice

N.B. x must be 1 or 2 – use accordingly

Once mounted

Press alt+f2

type

nautilus

You will see cdrom mouted on the left

click it

a file dlinkusbmodem .deb present

Double click it

Install it

Step 2

After install type at terminal

usbdeviceswitchdlink

It will show command executed successfully.

Check your network icon on your unity panel or gnome-classic’s gnome-panel you will see ‘Mobile Broadband’ option highlighted…..follow your instincts.

Done!!

I’m using this dongle with reliance netconnect 3g.

Note

In case you are not able to mount the device ie step 1,there is alternative:

1.Connect device to windows PC . (do not install the Dlink.exe. if already installed uninstall it) Then reconnect device It will show as usb storage device.

2.Browse it and copy file dlinkusbmodem.deb (our driver) to any sotage device

3.log in ubuntu and paste file to any directory and install it der by double clicking (if it gives error go for terminal command) or type following comand at terminal

sudo dpkg install dlinkusbmodem .deb 

4.Drivers shoud be installed

now follow instruction as per Step 2

WARNING!!: Modem connection and disconnection regression- typical of usb 3g modems will occur if you run

sudo apt-get update

be WARY when you run the above command, as your modem might start getting disconnected when you enable the network!

If it occurs, reinstall the drivers after purging them fully. This effectually will solve the problem. Follow the above steps to install.

ALERT!:

*Just want to bring to your notice… If you insert your 3g sim card in the dongle you might get instant connection.. After a certain period of time and usage the dongle will get disconnected!! I had taken a 3GB FRC pack for first usage. I spent a few days with this problem until I went to the showroom of my service provider where he stated… The data used upto 1GB is at the customers discretion. Once that data is used your connection cuts because your IMEI no. of the dongle goes in for verification( to check whether the device has a valid and not stolen IMEI). This procedure can take upto 3 days……….. After three days i call the tech support of my service provider and they confirmed it will take another 2 days for the connection and the rest of the 2 GB usage back. I CONTINUOUSLY GOT ” MODEM DISCONNECTED” ERROR WHILE USING THE 3G SIM CARD WITH THIS DONGLE. THIS IS A TYPICAL PROBLEM MOST USB MODEMS HAVE AND I THOUGHT ITS THE SAME THING…UNTIL I INSERTED MY 2G SIM CARD AND GOT THE CONNECTION INSTANTANEOUSLY!! i HAD A 2G CONNECTION IN MY PHONE’S SIM AND I GOT A 18KB/S SUSTAINED DOWNLOAD SPEED WITH THIS DONGLE. ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED.*

*NOW for the fun part:—>

Using 3g connection using this dongle on my lubuntu 12.04 netbook and connecting to my wireless TP-LINK N 300 router to get internet connection to all the computers on the network.

3G dwm 156 DONGLE–>>LUBUNTU NETBOOK–>>ETHERNET PORT OUT–>>CAT5/CAT6 CABLE–>>WAN PORT OF TP-LINK WIRELESS N ROUTER–>>GETTING INTERNET CONNECTION ON 4 ROUTER PORTS AND WIFI–>getting connection on my desktop computer using D-link wifi dongle DWA 131.

Here is the procedure:–

from my lubuntu 12.04 netbook …enable 3g connection using dwm 156 and check internet connection

connect my ethernet port of my netbook to wan port of router

open network-manager on netbook

goto wired connection 1 (eth0)

press edit button

goto IPv4 settings

enable- shared to other computers

save.

reboot router and netbook.

DONE!

NOW if you get connection-disconnected error do the following:–>

open terminal

type

sudo su --enter password

then type

killall dnsmasq

DONE!

If need be check your router’s wan IP settings *

Now i’m sharing internet connection using D-link DWM 156 with 7 computers.

Install the Liquorix kernel on Ubuntu 12.04/Ubuntu 12.10 x86 and x86_64 bit

Install the liquorix kernel on Ultimate Edition 3.5/ BlackOpal64(ubuntu 12.04 derivative)

first adding the entry to the sources list for the repos:

echo "deb http://liquorix.net/debian sid main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/liquorix.list
echo "deb-src http://liquorix.net/debian sid main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/liquorix.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install '^liquorix-([^-]+-)?keyring.?'

check the repos:

sudo apt-cache search liquorix

………all the different kernels will be show………as of late 3.6.0 is the latest and newest one. If the above command does not show anything then reboot.
NOTE: THE LIQUORIX KERNELS ARE BEING UPDATED AND MAINTAINED. PLEASE CHECK THE LATEST KERNEL BY RUNNING THE ABOVE COMMAND AND ANY PREVIOUS VERSIONS INCLUDING THE ONE MENTIONED BELOW WILL NOT GET INSTALLED!!! ENTER THE CORRECT KERNEL WHICH THE ABOVE COMMAND WILL SHOW
The new liquorix kernel requires gcc 4.7 as its dependency…………..install it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7

Next install linux-headers and linux-image using:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.6.0-6.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64 linux-image-3.6.0-6.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64

THis is the liquorix kernel that will get successfully installed…..

Done……just reboot to the new kernel.

Amazingly enough this liquorix kernel is more stable than the default kernel packed with Ubuntu 12.04 and kernel 3.6.6!!((but credit must also goto GCC4.7). This kernel integrates the BFS(brain fuck scheduler) and those who know what it is and its benefits will know this is the best thing money cant buy……built by another aussie Con Kolivas. Strangely enough he also developed the fair scheduling and the algorithms upon which CFS (Completely Fair Scheduler) was built and now formally inducted and a de-facto standard for linux kernels.

Those facing Nvidia 550ti startup problems and other radeon problems can try this……….as this is not only stable but causes the least compiz(but WHO cares for compiz!!) crashes..

Note: for all you 32-bit lovers there is a 32 bit available in the repos.
